The Adamantine Forge in Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most rewarding locations to discover during the first act of the game. Nestled deep within the treacherous depths of Grymforge in the Underdark, this ancient apparatus allows players to craft powerful, high-tier equipment that can carry a party through tough encounters. Operating the forge, however, requires specific materials and a solid understanding of its multi-step mechanics.

Gathering the Required Materials for Forging

Before you can craft equipment at the Adamantine Forge, you must collect two essential components: Mithral Ore and a specific Mould. Moulds determine the shape of the item you wish to make, such as scale mail, splint armour, or weapons like longswords and maces. Mithral Ore serves as the raw material and can be harvested from glowing blue veins located around the Grymforge region.

Because Mithral Ore is extremely rare in the game world, players can only craft a limited number of items during a single playthrough. It is best practice to explore the surrounding subterranean paths fully to find all available moulds before deciding which item to forge. Choosing defensive gear like heavy or medium armor often grants incredible protection against critical hits for your main tanks.

Preparing the Forge Mechanism

Once you reach the massive circular platform containing the forge, you must interact with its central machinery to start the process. Interact with the Crucible to insert your harvested Mithral Ore, and place your chosen mould into the Mould Chamber. Pulling the forge lever will trigger the central hammer to drop down and lower the platform into the lower chamber.

Lowering the forge brings you closer to the lava valve required to melt down the ore. Make sure your party is spread out around the platform before turning the valve. Opening the valve floods the forge area with molten lava and triggers a major encounter with the guardian of the forge.

Defeating the Forge Guardian

Activating the lava valve summons Grym, an ancient elemental construct tasked with protecting the Adamantine Forge. Grym possesses massive defensive stats and is completely immune to most attack types unless superheated by the surrounding lava. You must lure the boss onto the lava paths or directly under the central hammer mechanism to strike effectively.

Using the massive forge hammer on Grym deals immense bludgeoning damage that can crush the construct in just a few hits. Keep a ranged character stationed near the lever to activate the hammer whenever Grym stands in the center of the arena. Once Grym is defeated, you can safely retrieve your newly forged adamantine gear from the mould chamber.
